Mod Madness

With some exciting new mods on the horizon and some already sucking us in, this is the perfect time to showcase some of the best new projects to date.

Mechwarrior: Living Legends

Living Legends is a full conversion mod for Crysis.  It is built on the fabled CryENGINE 2. The mod team has promised to faithfully reconstruct the Battletech universe to the last detail, offering a great mix of FPS and SIM action.  Considering the long hiatus of our favorite 14-story tall war-machines, this is bound to get your blood boiling.  With one of the most beloved franchises strangely absent the last few years, it’s refreshing to find that some fans haven’t forgotten about it.  Luckily, these fans are in the position to return us to the middle of the 31st century war.  The mod team is boasting an incredible laundry list of features including 28 unique Battlemechs, 4 unique tanks, 6 original ground vehicles and 8 different types of aircraft.  If that’s not enough, players will also have access to over 30 handheld weapons!

The mod intends to emphasize the multiplayer aspect of the franchise, showcasing the iconic factions and team-based, goal-oriented combat.  This promises to return classic fans to the golden era of NetMech, although this time with an unparalleled level of immersion.   Living Legends will also show off dynamic weather/lighting and fully destructible environments.  Although no release date is scheduled yet, you can find more information on their official website (http://www.mechlivinglegends.net/), including plenty of preliminary screenshots and concept art to get you thirsty for some Clan blood.

Star Wars: First Strike

Not exactly new, and already in full swing, is the remarkable First Strike, a FPS full conversion mod of Battlefield 2142 presenting our beloved original Star Wars universe.  If there is one way to relive the authentic galactic war, this is it.  It sticks you right in the trenches and doesn’t let up.  Fans of the original Star Wars Trilogy will be ecstatic to learn that they can finally return to the universe in a fast and furious FPS.  Players can expect to find the classic factions – Rebel and Imperial – and a whole slew of playable classes.  Over 40 authentic weapons and over 20 vehicles have been included in the mod.  Combat focuses on teamwork, large maps and vehicles commonly associated with the Battlefield franchise.  Fans familiar with this gameplay will feel right at home.  There are also detailed player ranking ladders for the competitive FPSer.  The mod team is constantly working to improve the game and add additional content.  First Strike can be downloaded from their official website: http://www.fsmod.com/us/.

Star Wars Galaxies: Pre-Cu Emulators

SWG Emu AT-ATThe faithful fans of the Star Wars: Galaxies have decided to take matters into their own hands.  Scheduled to launch in the coming months, the Pre-Cu Emulators will return players to the heyday of Star Wars: Galaxies back before SOE mucked everything up and alienated all of their fans.  If you are unaware of the dissension in the MMO, here is the long story, short.  SOE radically revamped the game, changing everything the older faithful players knew and loved.  They even went as far as making Jedi a starting profession, ruining the hard work of many players who had spent many months working to become a Jedi.  Well, no longer will the fans stand idle; they have decided to recreate the game the loved.  The best part is it’s legal and free!

The two main proprietors of this incredible dream are Galaxies: Reborn and True Galaxies.  After the hard work of teams SWG:ANH and SWG:Emu to create the emulator these websites will be dedicated to running these new servers until the end of time.  This project is highly anticipated by all the disgruntled fans that can’t wait to return to the galaxy they loved.  However, great endeavors take time, and no release date is announced yet.  You can find more information at http://www.truegalaxies.com/forums/ and http://www.galaxiesreborn.com/.
