World of Warcraft: Apprentice Mounts

Well the patch is finally here, it went live sometime yesterday and I’ve been spending my time leveling up my hunter to get one of these mounts.  At first, reading the patch notes I thought that these were special mounts for level 30 characters at a cheaper price than their level 40 cousins.  I apparently was wrong.  It looks like they just took the 60% faster level 40 mounts and made them available sooner and for less gold.

Can we get a refund on the ones we already bought at 40?  No?  Damn, couldn’t hurt to ask.  Ah well, the mounts available at level 30 are your standard mounts for your race and faction.  You can purchase whatever mount belongs to your race for 35 gold, the gold is really mostly for the riding training.  You can purchase mounts of other races in your chosen faction (Horde or Alliance) but you must first become exalted with the other race of your choice before you can.

The mounts available by race are, in no particular order:  Elekks for the Dranei (Alliance), Hawk Striders for the Blood Elves (Horde), Horses for the Humans (Alliance), Kodos for the Tauren (Horde), Mechanostriders for the Gnomes (Alliance), Raptors for the Trolls (Horde), Nightsabers for the Night Elves (Alliance), Skeletal Horses for the Undead (Horde), Rams for the Dwarves (Alliance) and lastly Wolves for the Orcs (Horde).

This doesn’t take into account some of the special mounts available in the game that were previously available at level 40.  Some of the mounts were available through special events or trading cards and are more rare, does anyone out there have one that is useable at level 30 now to be sure?  The special mounts are the Spectral Tiger mount available from trading game cards, this came in a level 40 – 60% faster and a level 60 – 100% faster variants, not sure if the level 40 is now available at 30 now or not.  The riding turtle, which really isn’t a very popular mount anyway due to it’s 0% increase in speed doesn’t really list a level requirement.  And lastly the Brewfest Ram which also comes in two flavors like the Spectral Tiger, this mount doesn’t come from trading cards though.  You can get this mount by participating in Brewfest, a special event in October.  You need 600 Brewfest prize tickets to turn in for the mount and can choose either the normal or epic version.  The epic version you can own but only use if you already have the riding ability trained to use epic mounts, which is the expensive part.
