Syp over at Waaagh! has a post up about the CE for Warhammer being sold out by this coming Monday, possibly. This got me to thinking about my previous experience with a Collector’s Edition and whether or not it’s worth the money to buy the CE for WAR.
First, we have to take into account what you get out of it. With my last pre-ordered CE addition for AoC, I got a ring, a cape and basically a whole lotta nothin. The ring was what I was really after for the XP bonus, but turned out to be only 2%. Not much of a bonus, not fifty dollars worth of a bonus anyway. The WAR preorder comes with something similar in the form of an XP bonus item, but this one is only useable three times – then it’s a paper weight. You can use the Libram of Insight up to three times for sixty minutes per time with a ninety minute cooldown timer between uses. That means if you use it you’d better be damn sure you are going to be online for the next 60 minutes. No word yet on how much of an XP bonus you’ll get from it but I’m wagering it will be better than 2% if it’s a limited use item.
You also get twelve quests in the Tome of Knowledge that other players apparently won’t be getting, offering unique rewards and unique titles for your character. Not to sure this would be worth it if this type of reward follows the lines of most other CE rewards I’ve seen. The rewards will probably be mostly show-off items, only good because not everyone and their uncle has one. Same with the character titles – most likely when you get to higher levels you’ll probably find titles you’d want to display more anyway.
Bonus ingame content also includes twelve character heads both male and female to choose from when designing your tunes. It’s just another way to show off your uniqueness by giving you something other players can’t have that is otherwise useless. This however will probably be a good selling point for some people who really want to stand out from the crowd. For one thing, this is not like any other CE item in any other game I’ve come across. This is your head man, you won’t be replacing it later with something cooler you find in some dungeon. Good move by EA-Mythic, just not good enough to convince me.
The only other items are an artbook which I never looked at for AoC either, an original graphic novel “Warhammer Online: A Prelude to War”, which actually would be pretty cool to thumb through and an exclusive Games Workshop miniature of the Greenskin Warboss, Grumlok and his shaman, Gazbag. The miniature wouldn’t be much more than a decoration for me since I don’t play table top Warhammer, my old roommate would probably eat that up but it’s just a figurine to me.
All told, no it’s not worth it for me to get the Collector’s Edition just based on the in-game content. Paying extra for a comic book and a figurine isn’t going to convince me otherwise either. But that’s just me, what about you? Have you heard how much experience bonus you get with the Librams of Insight? It would have to be significant to justify it for me, given that it gets used three times then gets trashed. What’s your take? Is it worth it?
Oh, on a side note, Amazon is showing that they are shipping the CE versions of WAR on September 30, 2008.
