Why I’m Not Buying Warhammer Online

At least, why I’m not going to buy it right away.  Snafzg over at TheGreenSkin.com made a great point, in my opinion, when he posted that he thought the next beta phase for WAR could be the actual release.  We’ve seen it so many times before - they are called rocky releases.  The next big MMO comes out and it’s riddled with problems and missing content that will be patched in later.

Our latest shining example, Age of Conan.  I was looking forward to AoC for over a year now and when it finally got here I poured money into a Collector’s Edition, because I was sure I was going to need the extra stuff with all the time I’d lose to this game.  What’s more, I spent extra money on Early Access for the game which ended up being a complete waste because the servers were down more than they were up during the EA time frame, which led to paying for unplayable time.  Not happy about that.  Then the game has so many problems both getting in and once in - playing.  Content is missing or bugged throughout and it led to a very poor first impression of the game.

I look back and remember reading about all the game mechanics that were going to be fun for AoC and really wish I didn’t sign up yet.  I cancelled my subscription before my first month was up and don’t know if I’ll ever go back.  If I had waited until this ‘beta release’ phase was complete and tried it - maybe I’d have a different opinion and would have enjoyed the game?  Who knows.

I don’t want to do the same thing with WAR.  I really don’t want to be disappointed with the initial release.  I’m not hardcore enough anymore to where I need to get in and grind up levels right away, I want to enjoy the process of going up slowly and immersing myself in the Warhammer Universe.  If it’s being patched every other day and filled with bugs I don’t know that I could do that.  So I’ve decided that I’m going to give it, at the very least, a month after release before I even think about it - maybe more.

I love the thought of WAR enough to wait until it is properly polished.  I’ve been burnt so many times before with playing at release and getting a bad taste in my mouth that I want to give this one time to mature before checking it out.  Is it going to burn me up?  Oh ya, you know it.  But in the long run I think I’ll enjoy the game more if it’s actually finished before I jump in with both feet.

Just so we’re clear, the only evidence I’m putting forth that Mythic’s next phase of beta will be release is that they have admitted that there will huge potential for massive bugs and issues with their new living cities and yet they won’t delay again to bring the four cut cities up to snuff.

I won’t comment on the rest of the game at this point (performance, bugs, etc.).

I agree 100% Snafzg, that’s why I’m going to wait. Bugs are bugs and the more I see the more it ruins it for me. I think back to games I jumped right in and they all had bugs that made it not as fun, AoC was the worst for me.

Games like WoW, where I didn’t try it until well after release (a year or more for WoW) were fun right from the start because so much was hashed out. It’s nothing personal against WAR, I will play it just not right away. And this isn’t limited to WAR, almost every MMO is doing this sort of thing. When you have pushy investors who want to see a return on their dollar - it’s hard not to see this sort of buggy start.

Yeah, that makes sense. I actually tried cancelling my collector’s edition order from EA Store but they won’t let me! :P I’ve been thinking lately that I don’t care about the head start program any more which is the only reason I bought the CE in the first place.

The down side to the head start is that you’ll get on servers that will probably be capped once once the rest of your friends come around to join you (who didn’t buy a CE).

I definitely don’t want that to happen.

Some folks will try to get in early to reserve character names too. But none of that really makes much difference to me, I don’t even know what class I’m going to play just yet.

Hopefully the release will be limited in bugs and will get fun quick. I’ll be keeping an eye out from the community to see the state of the game. That’s when I’ll know I can go in without feeling slighted for paying to play a beta.

AoC was quite a let down for me too. I remember hearing all about it while I was still playing wow and I REALLY wanted a PvP game. I waited for launch before I even thought about buying AoC. Why? Because Funcom didn’t have any experience with making an MMO(or at least one I had played)AoC could be a really fun game once its bugs are out.

Mythic has nearly a decade worth of MMO EXP! Having a solid foundation to create a basic world for players to play/interact in is a GIANT leg up on Funcom. The character type bugs like the ones you experienced in AoC (ie necro, failed abilities) will not be a problem in WAR. The bugs will mainly come from the innovative and pre-mature features to Mythic, imho. Once open beta starts I’m sure the community will speak up and it will reassure your confidence in WAR. :P

Thanks for the post Gompers, you know…that’s actually something I hadn’t thought of. Previous game making experience.

You might be right - WAR may have a smoother launch than AoC did, maybe. Though a lot of people claim AoC was one of the smoothest launches they’d seen - which is enough to set the cautious mood. I will definitely be keeping an eye out once the NDA drops to see what the beta guys are saying. I may be in sooner than I though - I really hope you are right.

I hope I’m right too because thats what I based my preorder-or-not dilema off of. Thanks for the read and speed demon reply.

Cheers!

This is why i don’t like getting these rocky releases. the bugs and missing content ruin it for me and so I just end up hating life and get all depressed, etc.. bugs are bugs so I’d rather wait.

I heard a lot of negative feedback for AoC, which is why I decided not to get it, and after reading this, I’m glad I did. The hype did hook me though. Oh well.

Couldn’t agree more - you never get a second chance to make a first impression they say. That’s true for games too. If you play a game and you think, “Man, this game sucks. Look at those buggy graphics.” You’re probably not going to go back and try it again when it’s better.
