Warhammer Gives Good and Bad News

Mark Jacobs announced some good news and some bad news for Mythic’s upcoming Warhammer Online.  Well, he announced some good news and alluded to other good news, heh.  First we’ll start with the good news, the bit he alluded to:  Warhammer Online won’t be delayed, probably.

The other good news, the part he actually did announce is that Mythic Entertainment is partnering with Evenbalance to incorporate Punkbuster anti-cheat into Warhammer Online.  Punkbuster is a great tool for other games out there, mostly first person shooters and has led to many cheaters being banned.  This should be a good addition to WAR to keep it as cheat free as possible.  No, it’s not perfect but it’s closer to perfect than it otherwise would be.

Okay, end good news.  Sorry I wish there were more.  Now on to the bad news, for which there is plenty.  In his interview, Mark Jacobs tried to be a silver lining polish on the fact that four of the six proposed capital cities are being removed from the initial launch.  Only two cities will remain, one per realm – Altdorf for the Empire and Inevitable City for Chaos, specifically.  According to Mark, this is a good thing because it does not delay launch and the other four cities will be included in the game at a later date better than they would be now.  This is supposed to give two awesomely done capital cities instead of six poorly done cities.  The problem is we’ve seen this kind of lack of content been done countless times before, most recently with Age of Conan having poorly done end of game content.  I don’t know without seeing the game first hand obviously, but I’m not sure developers realize how quickly hardcore gamers go through the content they are given when it is limited in such a way.  However, I’m going to be forced to give Mythic the benefit of the doubt based on Mark’s statement that the content on the two cities being included at launch is going to be much more significant than they had originally planned.  After all, these are going to have to entertain all the races, not just the two they were originally designed for.  Let’s see if they pull it off.

Now the really bad news, Mythic has decide to cut four classes from the game.  The really bad part is these are iconic classes – the even worse part is that they are being shelved, possibly indefinitely.  There is no guarantee these classes will ever be released.  The four classes being cut are Choppa (Greenskin), Hammerer (Dwarf), Blackguard (Dark Elf) and Knight of the Blazing Sun (Empire).  That’s two tank classes and two melee classes gone.  There are still plenty of other classes to choose from but this will not be a happy note for most hardcore WAR fans out there.
