The Downfall of Darkfall – A Fan’s Perspective

Darkfall Online has potential – a lot of potential.  But in the end the game for the most part seems to have failed, to keep my attention anyway.  I kept holding out and holding out and honestly for the lack of anything better right now I’ll probably hold out another month more.  But when my subscription comes due next time around I likely won’t be renewing.  That is of course unless some of the next few patches bring drastic changes.

Darkfall has many problems – no lore, an underabundance of content, a noticeable lack of features and an already damaged economy and skill system due to early exploits that were not addressed for a long time.  The biggest problem, in my eyes, is the exploits that were available to players in the early days.  True I was one of the players able to get in early but was not aware of nor did I take part in any of the exploits that were allowing for players to quickly level key PvP skills.  Given that this is a sandbox game with no content, PvP is where it’s at.  If you aren’t good at PvP in this game, chances are you aren’t going to have a lot of fun – there really isn’t much else to do.  Much else that is entertaining anyway.

Most of my days playing now are spent harvesting for resources – not really to level any crafting profession or to sell the resources but in stead to level my strength and vitality.  Two key components in PvP.  The reason I do this instead of killing goblins is because groups of PK’ers seem to swarm the lowbie PvE areas for easy kills.  I’m not much use against an exploited character and certainly not a group of them.  The big problem with the exploits is that none of the characters that abused them were punished in any way.  No bans, no stat resets, nothin’.  In fact, you could say they were rewarded – handsomely.  Now that they have maxed out combat and defense skills in a month or so of exploiting, Aventurine has removed the ability for others to follow in their footsteps – effectively separating these exploiters from the rest of the players in terms of advancement by months, if not years of regular gameplay.

The trouble with this is there is only one server and the number of people who abused afore mentioned exploits was not small.  There are large clans who shared secrets and raised their skills to the max making them near indestructible against normal players – the only players who stand a chance against them are the fellow exploiters.

Spending my days gathering resources to eventually ding another level of strength or vitality only to get steamrolled by an artificially enhanced player only serves to make me realize how far away I am from every catching these guys.  Fighting against a normal player is fun – fighting against most players is not.  It’s easy to spot, they are the ones who hit you 4 times as hard than you have ever hit anything in the game.  On top of that, when you hit them your damage is mitigated to half of what it is against any mob you’ve ever fought.  Yes, this is the last straw.  Players are quiting the game in large numbers and I will likely be soon to follow – Mortal Online is on the horizon after all.  Let’s pray they get it right and become what Darkfall could have been.
