SWG Emu – Profession Guide

It’s been awhile since Sony incorporated the NGE (New Game Enhancements *cough cough*) into Star Wars Galaxies, which completely changed the way the game was played – wrapping up professions into just a few basic choices.  So it may be difficult to remember what the profession choices and progression was like back in the day when you had 32 professions to choose from.  With SWG Emu well on it’s way to a final build, I thought it would be good to refresh your memory.  This is of course assuming my memory is working…

When you start the game, you will have the option of choosing from one of six starting professions:

  • Brawler – Melee Combat Specialis
Leads To: Teras Kasi Artist, Fencer, Swordsman & Pikeman
  • Marksmen – Ranged Combat Specialist
Leads to: Rifleman, Pistoleer, Carbineer, Smuggler, Commando, Bounty Hunter & Squad Leader
  • Entertainer – Social / Mind Pool Heals and Buffs
Leads to: Dancer, Musician & Image Designer
  • Scout – Tracking / Camps / Harvesting
Leads to: Ranger & Creature Handler
  • Medic – Healer Class
Leads to: Doctor, Combat Medic & Bio-Engineer
  • Artisan – Crafting
Leads to: Armor Smith, Weapon Smit, Shipwright, Architect,  Droid Engineer, Tailor, Chef & Merchant

You start the game with your novice profession and 250 skill points.  As you level up in your chosen profession you will decide among four trees of progression.  Each tree leads to a more advanced profession once you reach the minimum requirements.  You will have enough skill points to master two professions and still have a few to spare.  This is one of the greatest things about Pre-CU, the ability to build diverse character classes by mixing and matching professions.

When you first start the game, you can either start leveling in your chosen profession or go pick a second or even third starting profession to begin leveling in at the same time.  If you decide later that you want to unlearn some profession or skills in a certain profession to free up the skill points to use elsewhere, you can easily do so – you regain the skill points when you unlearn the skill, but you do not regain the experience.

You can generally have double the experience necessary to get to the next level in skill progression before your experience is capped, which means you can give up skills and have the experience already in waiting to gain new skills without having to go do a lot of grinding.  Also, you cannot give up a low to mid level skill without giving up the skills in the tree above it.

Make sure to get into the SWG Emu while it’s still in the testing phase to refresh your memory before it goes live!
