Star Wars Galaxies: The Social Aspect

Many people have many different feelings about Star Wars Galaxies. Some people love it just the way it is. But for the most part, many of the original players feel it is a dead game. Compared to the number of subscribers now as to pre-NGE, the old players are right. To me, the single biggest game killer for me was the loss of all the social aspects of the game. Places like shuttle ports, cantinas, player cities were a dead zone after the NGE. Players no longer needed to communicate with one another to find the best crafters because all crafters produced the same results. Cantinas were no longer much of a necessity because entertainers had no real benefit to players anymore. Shuttle wait times went to zero, so no one had to stand around and wait for the next trip off world, everything was instant. This totally unimmersed me in the game. It went from being a second life, to an instant gratification game for those who didn’t feel like playing for more than 15 minutes at a time. Sony tried to target a much larger audience by attracting more casual gamers but in doing so alienated their current client base, which quickly disappeared. This has not been lost on the folks writing the Star Wars Galaxies Emulator project and I really look forward to life as it used to be, not just jumping in and shooting a few storm troopers, but actually feeling like I’m part of the universe not just a passing spectator.
