Cryptic Studios finally let us in on their not so well kept secret, they are making a Star Trek Online MMORPG. Before it came out, we had a little fun trying to figure out what type of gameplay mechanics a game like this would have. Would you be the ship like in Eve or an avatar walking around the world like every other MMO out there. Cryptic went the traditional route with an avatar which I’m absolutely thrilled with. I liked my idea of a mix of the two but this could work out just fine.
I originally thought that this was going to be based soley in space and on the ships – my thought was that the Star Trek universe just had to many planets to incorporate – Cryptic apparently doesn’t think so. They are going to allow space action, on ship movement and away missions to planets! You can play as either a Starfleet Captain or a Klingon Warrior.
You’ll be in command of your own starship which you are free to customize to your liking. You are also going to need to recruit and train a crew for your ship but it looks like it will probably be an NPC crew to accompany you on the ship and away missions. No details yet on whether friends or guildmates can run the same ship together or not but this kind of makes sense. If you required ships to be run by more than one person – what if the people you run it with aren’t online? Looks like we’ll just have to build fleets instead. They do however mention that missions will take “you and your friends” into deep space, planetside and even aboard starships. So we’ll see.
Boy, this is just a month of sci-fi fan euphoria. First the new Star Wars MMO announced now Star Trek. I feel the geek in me coming out!
