With CrypticStudio’s having their ever so cryptic hint at a possible upcoming Star Trek MMORPG, questions are beginning to circulate about what it would be like. After reading an interesting question from the folks over at Massively, it got me thinking of possibilities. To sum it up, Kyle Horner at Massively was asking folks if the announcement does turn out to be a Star Trek based MMORPG, what would you rather play as. An actual character avatar walking about on the bridge with a group of friends controlling the ship or be the ship itself.
I think this thought process could really open the genre of MMORPG’s up to a whole new breed. Instead of just one or the other, what about both? Maybe not have a bunch of friends aboard the ship with you controlling it, they can have their own, but instead you control the ship err, as the ship when flying about and let you switch to a mode where you control the crew for more menial tasks than flying or combat such as performing scans or repairs to your ship, etc.
I thought it would be really unique for the game to take an even further step out of the beaten MMO path and ad an RPG element to the game. Instead of switching to control the crew in first person mode, perhaps a more overhead RPG style crew control. Basically you would be the ship ordering the crew, ha…how backward would that be, eh? Sounds like a badly written episode of Next Generation.
But really, perhaps you could be in ship control mode and bring up a mini-screen – similar to a map screen in other MMORPG’s that would allow you to order around crew members to perform tasks. This could add a real strategic element to the game, especially if you had to do it during combat. Losing you aft shields? Order that dude with no name in the red shirt to go into the hazardous compartment to fix it, damnit!
