Besides exciting PvE and PvP adventures, Runes of Magic offers lots of activities for crafters and traders as well. Players can accept gathering professions already in the starting areas, to collect materials for the crafting of weapons, armor, potions or nourishing meals. Later on, the professions of carpenter, blacksmith, armor crafting, alchemist, tailor and even cook are available. Alchemists mix potions, cooks prepare strengthening food, carpenters and blacksmiths produce the best weapons in the country, while armor crafters and tailors are catering for the protection needs.
Having taken the first steps in their profession, players can hire out as apprentice. Just like in real life, they can learn more than one profession in the fantasy-world of Runes of Magic and specialize later, depending on their interest.
There are a multitude of available crafting professions in Runes of Magic – each with four ranks: Apprentice, Craftsman, Specialist and Master. You can learn as many professions as you’d like at the Apprentice rank and become a Craftsman in up to six professions. Specialist narrows your options down to three trades and you can only Master in one trade.
Any crafting profession can be learned from a profession trainer in most cities and villages. Near each trainer you’ll find a set of tools necessary for crafting in your chosen profession. You can use the tools near any trainer or if you want a more private workshop you can purchase and setup these tools in your own house or guild hall.
There are obvious economic benefits to crafting as a way to make some gold. Another benefit however is crafted equipment is more likely to have extra rune slots available than equipment you’d find out in the wild. Runes can be added to a slot to increase the items stats, making sure even the most hardcore fashion victim can look great and still be effective in combat. Runes can be gathered from looting monsters or disenchanting other items. You can also use your Arcane Transmutator to put several lower level runes of the same type together to make a higher level rune or combine multiple types to make an all new rune!
You can also upgrade equipment with jewels you buy from NPC’s. Jewels are required to be refined first, giving you anywhere from a +1 to a +6 stat bonus on your equipment. There is a risk with applying jewels to get the best equipment however. The chance to successfully apply a jewel to a piece of equipment is only 30%. That leaves a lot of room for error – and any failures have a chance to lose all jewel upgrades on the equipment or even break the equipment itself. So be cautious.
