Darkfall Online – A Taste of Combat

Apart from my first PvP encounter in the human starter lands I haven’t seen a whole lot of PvP combat in Darkfall, until now. I’ve spent most of my time in or around my guild’s hamlet leveling my skills and doing some PvE hunting to get some better gear. Last night, when I logged into ventrillo just before opening up Darkfall I heard some of my clansmen complaining about a group bindstone camping them in our hamlet. In our very own town! The nerve.

Logging in to the game, I was pleased to find I was invulnerable for a few minutes – which was good considering I logged in right next to our bindstone. One of our hamlet’s houses was nearby with an attacker perched atop it. He apparently saw me spawn in with my full gear on and was counting on an easy gank. He counted wrong. I quickly moved around the building and joined him atop the roof while still completely invulnerable. At the same time one of my encamped clansmen spawned back in and began attacking from the ground, causing a distraction and allowing me free access to this particular orc’s backside – a bad more on his part, especially considering he was trying to gank us while he had no armor. Before he realized I was swinging his health was already more than half gone.

Realizing his mistake, the orc tried to make a break for it, first jumping off the roof and then running around back up the stairs. This actually almost worked for him, while it wasn’t tricky enough to shake me he did manage to get me and one of my comrades jammed up on the stairs which gave him some breathing room to make his getaway. He made a run out of our hamlet and found a hiding spot near our hot tub (the lava pit behind our town). He was just sitting to rest when I caught him. He quickly jumped up and began making his away along the cliff of the lava pit – occasionally turning to swing back. My biggest concern was making sure he stayed between myself and the lava, while I don’t yet have the knockback skill I wasn’t taking any chances of him knocking me into the lava for the kill. At the last second, just as I swung the killing blow he jumped off the cliff. He died in mid air but his tombstone ended up in the lava – after the rest of the fight I did return for it and found a handsome supply of armor and weaponry on his body. Which begs the question – why in Agon was he fighting naked?

With my first kill out of the way and only two attackers left, I made my way to the South of our hamlet where my clansmen were starting to gang up on the two who were left.  I joined the fight just as one of the attackers killed another of my clansmen and was attempting to loot him.  He was low on health and would have been wise to retreat and heal rather than loot – his mistake.  It took two quick slashes across his back to adorn the ground with another tombstone and plant another attacker – leaving now just one.

The last attacker was launching arrows from a nearby mountainside and was hasty to retreat, though he ran out of stamina rather quickly.  I was low myself and did not have my mount on me, so I could only pursue without actually making any gains on catching him.  Lucky for me and not so much for him, my clansmen were getting reorganized and mounted.  It took a little while for them to catch up to the pursuit but this orc wasn’t getting away.  They rode in and cut him down like a dog.  Watching that was almost more fun than dealing the death blow myself.  Now this is Darkfall!

Man I just started playing WoW again.

I’ll probably check out DF when the US servers open (if they ever do).

I’m glad I got in now. There are bugs to be sure, but nothing game breaking. It’s really fun and playing on Euro servers isn’t bad. I never noticed any issues with lag. My pings range from 100-150ms on average.
