A new startup company called VR-Wear has developed a third party viewer for the popular MMO, Second Life. To sum up how it works, the viewer uses a webcam to track your head movements and expressions to immitate them in Second Life through your avatar. If you nod – so does your avatar.
The technology is pretty limited and basic right now but it’s a step in the right direction for a more hands-free experience and can only serve to increase immersion into SL. So far the technology can simulate the following movements: Yes and No head movements and bending your head to the left and right. It can also simulate some facial expressions such as smiling or surprise. And for those of you who use voice chat in game – lip syncing to give your avatar an even better realistic feel.
Versions are currently available for both Windows and Mac based systems. Goto SL.VR-Wear.com to download a copy of the viewer.
