I’ve been toying back and forth with the idea of buying the Collector’s Edition of Age of Conan for my pre-order. I’ve been doing some research and found a great article over at Keen and Graev’s Gaming Blog that talks about the pro’s and con’s of buying the CE. Keen talks in his article about what he feels are the two most important features of the CE, the soundtrack and the XP ring. For those being the only two bonus items he would find useful he has opted out of buying the CE and went for the normal edition.
I tend to disagree and find the ring, the cape and the map useful items worth the investment. The mount, which will be a War Rhino when I order from BestBuy will be an addition I get either with the CE or the normal edition. I’ve decided to go with the extra bonus XP as being the most valuable item in the CE. I know I will probably eventually find another ring to replace it before I reach level 80, but this will be a nice addition to speed me on my way, I’m sure I will use it well into my upper levels. We’ll see if it’s worth the call, but the extra stamina will be a nice bonus too. In later levels, a percentage increase in stamina could be large and will be more valuable later in the game than in the early stages, in my opinion. Wish me luck and let me know what you decide to go with.

I got the standard. Just couldn’t see paying that kind of money for a game I wasn’t even sure I was going to like. Besides that most CE’s aren’t a good value.

Right on, I actually thought of that. I don’t know if I’m going to like it either I’m just assuming I am. My view is that if I got the standard edition and decided I really like the game, I would probably wish I had bought the CE for the fancy items it comes with later and then it would be to late. I’m not about to go buy the game twice to get the extra items and certainly wouldn’t start over leveling just to incorporate a 2% XP bonus (assuming that’s what the ring really is).
