I was experiencing a bit of Star Wars nastalgia over the past couple of weeks, so I fed the need by watching as many of the movies as my wife would allow and when that got old I dug out some of my old games. The first one I found and played was Star Wars: Empire at War, probably because it’s my most recent one. During one of the space combat scenes I suddenly got an urge for a little X-Wing vs. Tie-Fighter, I had to settle for X-Wing Alliance since I couldn’t find the afore mentioned discs. :(
A long story short, I blasted some bad guys and flew around a bit in my YT-1300 just for kicks and suddenly got the urge to put a lightsaber through the chest of a storm trooper, so on over to The Force Unleashed on my Wii. You get the general idea here, I played a lot of Star Wars. But as I was going through all this I started to think, “Man, how cool would it be to be able to do all this….in ONE game!” So my idea for Star Wars: Ultimate X-Wing was born. Of course, I have zero pull with the boys at LucasArts, but I thought I’d throw my game design idea out there anyway.
I was thinking this could work as a cool map based FPS style game with multi-tiered maps. The basic idea I had for a map was two “end game” points, such as planets (of course only a small part of a planet – see Battlefield 2 sized map) to defend and/or conquer. Initially I was thinking of having separate land and space maps that each team would advance to after a goal on the previous map, but then I thought about it and I like the idea of having all maps running at the same time, basically four different zones: two space zones in the sky above each ground base zone. The reason I thought this would be a good idea is to give the game a more dynamic feel and allow for more playstyles that just everyone having to follow what the game wants you to do. The long and short of it is, this would allow players to stay on the ground if that’s what they wanted to do, there would be plenty of ‘mini-game’ type scenarios for players that aren’t yet in the direct conflict to do to support their team and prepare their defenses for the coming invasion. More on that in Part Three! Part two will be coming to you tomorrow and I’ll be focusing on Space combat and different roles in space where Part Three will focus on ground combat, different roles and support structures.
