Google Lively, which opened up in July of this year as an ambitious social networking project set to compete with Second Life will be closing it’s doors on December 31st of 2008. The decision to shut down Lively was made due in large part to the economy and Google’s new stance on tightening it’s belt and curtailing unnecessary spending.
Google is looking to focus more on it’s core business search engine, ad marketing and applications. Google will likely cut more of the riskier projects like Lively that have less potential to pay off than their bread and butter apps and ads.
If you’ve created a Lively room, it will no longer be accessible after December 31st. Google is encouraging all room owners to take whatever screenshots and videos of your hard work now before the site is discontinued. Say goodbye to the much under-used GameZig Lively room! I’ll miss my pet sharks.
