Playing a twink in the battlegrounds of World of Warcraft is a ton of fun!  That’s the upside, the downside is it costs a ton of gold to do it!  Even the cheap twink builds I’ve laid out for you here can be out of reach for all but the most hardcore players.  Let’s face it, not everyone has 5000 gold just sitting around with nothing to spend it on.  So the question is, “How do you fund your twink?”.

There are several good ways to get this done and several bad ways.  The bad ways are pretty obvious and include things like scamming other players out of money in one fashion or another or buying your gold from a Chinese gold farmer style website.  Both bad – be warned if you do either of these the sky will fall on your head!  There are three really good ways to make serious coin in WoW that I personally use (all three) to fund my twinks.  If you think it’s daunting or that it will take you forever to make the gold, think again.  I have three completed, fully geared and enchanted twinks in my roster and several more being built.  It’s not cheap but if you follow this guide you’ll soon be on your way.

Option 1 – Farming

This has got to be the broadest term for how to make gold but it’s really easy to do, no matter what your level.  Every level has some place you can go to farm, where is up to you – just remember the key here is to find a place with multiple mobs that respawn often and have good drops.  You can make money both off gathering green and blue (and sometimes epic) item drops off these mobs and selling it as well as getting coin off of them. 

Some more advanced farming techniques involve going after specific types of drops, not just gear.  For example, if a certain type of cloth is in demand on your server – farm it and make a fortune!  I personally have a 70 warlock I farm with and have farmed many lower level instances by running through quickly and auto looting everything.  My current farming method is the Elemental Plateau in Negrand (Outlands) where I farm motes of fire, water and air.  These drop fairly often and sell for about 2 gold a peice.

At the bottom of the post I welcome you to post up any good farming spots you find for lower levels to help out others. 

Option 2 – Auction House Reselling

This is a great way to make fast money but you’ll need to already have at least some money to do it.  This principle is pretty simple – search the AH for players selling items far below the normal market value, buy their auctions and post them right back up for a hefty profit.  You wouldn’t beleive how often people post something up at auction undervalued without realizing it.  I’ve made over 100 gold on one transaction with this method and check every time I visit the AH.

To do this method successfully, I recommend getting a plugin to help you scan the AH for good deals.  Auctioneer is a great plugin, you can get it over at Curse.com for free.  Once you have this addon installed, go to the auction house and scan all available auctions.  This will take upwards of 15 minutes to complete so don’t start your scan if you are in any kind of hurry.  Once the scan is complete, go to “Search” the auction house from the tabs at the bottom of the AH window.  From there you can specifiy your minimum profit margin and search for any good deals or quick turn-arounds.

Option 3 – Mining and Herbalism

These are by far the best gathering professions in my opinion and can make a ton of money.  I make several hundered gold every hour off mining in Outlands alone.  I mainly search for mineral nodes and gather up and herbs I happen across, but if you are hardcore you could set yourself up a macro that will switch between scanning for minerals and herbs every few seconds – guaranteeing you comlete coverage so you don’t miss anything.  Another good addon to get for this profession is Gatherer from Curse.com.

If are mining at any level you will have a lot of competition both on the field and in the AH but it all sells.  At higher levels it may actually be more profitable if you have a jewelcrafter friend/guild mate prospect your ore for gems and sell them for increased profit rather than trying to sell plain ore (which is my market!) or bars of whatever mineral you are farming.

Things to keep in mind when outfitting your twink is first and foremost not to get overwhelmed.  When purchasing gear or especially high level enchants, the price can sometimes be very daunting.  Just farm for and buy one at a time if you need to and slowly build your twink.  Don’t be surprised to see some weapons or enchants topping 500 gold – depending on your build.  Even the cheaper twink builds can match this amount!  While building my 19 hunter twink, the pants alone cost 40 gold on the AH while the [item]29536en[/item] cost over 250 gold!
