When I first saw the trailers and game play footage of Diablo 3, I must say I was impressed. Finally things in the game looked the way I thought they should have. I was especially impressed with the end boss characters being much larger, looking more like you think a boss should look. Mean.
But there are some hardcore Diablo fans out there that don’t like the overall direction the art is taking in Diablo 3. There is even a petition to Blizzard to change the direction while the game is still in it’s early Alpha phase of development. Old fans of the Diablo series feel that the game is taking a cartoonish feel to the graphics reminiscent of World of Warcraft.
Some things I can agree with them on, like oversized weapons and armor for starters. I was never a big fan of these huge weapons or especially these huge shoulder pads of armor that you see in WoW. They often seem so disproportionate to the character model that it looks like Hercules would have trouble carrying this stuff around much less wielding it in combat. I could do with smaller models here. But overall I have to disagree with the art direction petition – I like the way the new Diablo is looking.
Besides the armor, one of the big arguments is the dark feeling, poorly lit dungeons of the past. They don’t like the new look with the green or blue light glow to make the dungeon feel gloomy. They feel this is still to cartoony and not up to the level of a mature game. Personally I think it adds the right feel to the dungeons that the game needed. It sets the mood while still allowing you to see without cranking up the gamma, which by the way I did in previous Diablo titles.
Another argument is that there is to much shiny, vivid colors on outside areas. With beautiful forests, waterfalls, rainbows and the like. You have to remember, this is 20 years in time line difference from previous Diablo titles. The dungeons may still be ominous but the outside world is supposed to have all but forgotten the evil that was Diablo and his minions. The outside world she be shiny and peaceful looking – at least in the beginning of the story line. I’m sure things grow more dark towards the end.
