Call of Duty 4 is one of my favorite games right now – I’ll always love realistic, modern era first person shooters. No laser guns, no space aliens – just good old fashion shoot’em up fun. After my recent computer upgrade I’ve been playing a lot more CoD4 now that it’s playable. I’m having a blast for sure but I’m also seeing some things I could live without that are down right frustrating.
I don’t know if it’s just me or what but it’s very frustrating not being able to get around other players in the game. I’ve died more times because some jackass was standing in a doorway I needed to get through. And I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a grenade land at my feet and turned to run only to stand still running into a teammate trying to run in the opposite direction. Of course, my body safely shielded my teammate from the blast of the frag grenade – just adding insult to injury. Or how about crouching behind an object to take a few pop shots at the enemy but when you need to move to avoid getting your head blown off you can’t because someone is proning behind you? That’ll get you riled up.
It’s not just the players though, so many things in the game world are sticky. Doorways, little rocks on the ground, invisible crap you can’t even see sometimes. When you bump into these things you just kind of run in place. If you are trying to avoid getting shot and run into something you didn’t know was there, you are going to be weighed down with some led pretty quick. If you stop moving you stop breathing, that’s just how it is. Not to mention half that crap kills your sprint.
In short, in the next Call of Duty game to come out they need to really work on this aspect of the game engine. If you can’t simply run through a friendly player you should atleast be able to slide past them in a doorway or push them back. Damn just make doorways wider if nothing else. And for objects they really need to have you roll around them if you hit them while running so you atleast keep moving. You won’t be going as fast as you otherwise might, but at least you won’t get stuck.
I tried to jump a wall last night and got stuck on the wall – unable to move forward or back or jump. I just stood there until I got shot which fortunately wasn’t but about 5 seconds. Then my very next spawn, I tried to run across a plank on the ground covering a little gap and sure as hell my foot got caught on the edge of the plank. Again I couldn’t move but fortune smiled on me and I was able to wiggle lose after a few seconds without landing in some snipers sights. But I won’t always be that lucky. I don’t stick to objects all THAT often but when it happens I raise hell. It’s the players that need the real fix in my opinion first – the objects are more secondary as you can learn where they are and avoid them if need be. You can’t predict when some dumbass is going to run into a doorway when a grenade is cooking at your feet and just stop and let you die.

I know what you mean, actually I’ve been killed by a teamate pushing me out of a door and into enemy fire. Being able to push through them would be nice, but it may eliminate the “realism” of the game.
