Awhile back, I went to visit my brother who plays a lot more console games than I do and he had rented Mass Effect for the weekend from Blockbuster. I’m not big on game pads but he coaxed me into trying it out, since it’s more fun than just watching him play I gave it a shot. I must say, it was overall a pretty game but I quickly got turned off in large part because it had the same game breaking feature (to me anyway) that KoToR had, pausing in the action. Pausing to switch weapons made the game feel like less action and more turn based. I think the last turn based game I played was Trade Wars and I haven’t looked at another since.
Fast forward to last night and another visit to little brother to find he had picked up the PC version of the game. Because his system leaves much to be desired, he was using the pause option to switch weapons in combat so he wouldn’t suffer from bad frame rates, or as bad anyway. But I found out the PC version doesn’t necessarily require you to use the pause feature like the console does. That was refreshing, if I can just map the weapons and biotech abilities to my Nostromo it would feel a lot more like an action packed FPS. That’s my kind of game. I haven’t picked up the title myself yet, but has anyone played it this way, without the pause in action? How are the frame rates with the system you are running? Don’t forget to tell us your specs!!
