I’m typically addicted to checking my blog, writing for it or reading my RSS feeds from my fellow bloggers – but not in the past few days. I finished the upgrade on my system and have been pretty much playing Call of Duty 4 ever since. I have so many other games I want to check out but having one of my favorites so playable now is making it hard to pull away.
I went from a low frame rate (often pausing the screen when I fired) to a stable high frame rate of 125fps (locked – it could go higher, but why?). Previously I would be able to kill one or two people then die – mostly because my screen would freeze just long enough for a bullet to find me, especially when facing down more than one opponent. Now? Oh man – I went into a room with four or five guys and chopped them all down without so much as a hesitation. It’s amazing the difference good hardware can make on your personal performance in a game like this. Guys that always killed me before are either an even match now or stand no chance at all.
The downside – and probably the part that has me playing so much – is I had to wipe my hard drive because it’s not easy to transfer an existing RAID 0 array over to a new controller. So I lost all my stats and ranks. I’m starting over from Private (Captain as of last night) and having to unlock all my weapons and abilities again. I was pushing hard to get to Captain for the bandolier perk to get the extra ammo. I’ve been running out of primary and sidearm ammo consistantly, which is a good thing if I’m living that long. I’ve also been having a blast with CQB action with the shotgun. Without any screen lag I can jump/prone, flash whatever all around to get close enough to enemies to stick the shotty down their throats and spray the walls with their entrails. Muhahaha…I’m loving this.
It’s comforting to know the system is running this good – for all the games on the horizon it is a good feeling to know I don’t have to do any upgrades for a long while. Next up: WAR.
